I'm not sure how many things yet, but I'm trying to talk more about the things that happen in my head because of, um, reasons.

It's Christmas! Happy Christmas if you celebrate, happy holidays if you don't! And happy Wednesday if you really don't. I've had a nice day (a bit of family stress, but who's surprised?), a DVD-heavy haul of pressies (all the Iron Man films yay!), and a nice dinner including ice cream for dessert. Now we are doing Richard Osman's Pointless Quiz.

I also received lovely gifts from [personal profile] flippac and [personal profile] kaberett, who I love and adore. Thank you! <3 [personal profile] llamabitchyo, your card arrived at my old house and is on its way to me, thank you much!

I have failed at presents beyond the family and at doing cards at all this year. If I get a job soon, I might end up doing random midwinter cards at some point.

*

I received three excellent stories for Christmas this year! One from Make the Yuletide Gay and two(!) from Yuletide. I haven't read any more stories yet, but here are the ones I received!

Tell Your Story Walking (6434 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Haven
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Duke Crocker/Audrey Parker/Nathan Wuornos
Characters: Duke Crocker, Audrey Parker, Nathan Wuornos
Summary:

No matter how long he lived in Haven, Duke Crocker would never actually be able to believe the shit that went on in and around his hometown. It wasn't that he hadn't lived through totally unrealistic crap for way too long, it was just that it seemed to keep getting more and more completely unbelievable.

The fact that there was a guy standing on Main Street in the full sunlight putting off sparkles like a damned frosted Christmas ornament was pretty high on the list.

Eeeee, stories! I have several open in tabs and a mission to download allllll the fic onto my Kindle.

Thanks to the generous tuition of [personal profile] flippac, I have been getting into electronica a bit. Specifically, hard trance has grabbed my heart with an iron fist and won't let go. I have lots to say about the interesting things it's doing to my brain, but that needs a post of its own to unpack really. But it looks like it has the potential to be a really excellent brain hack for certain things, and I'm looking forward to playing with its potential more.

*

I've decided on a theme for 2014 - and tentatively, a theme for 2015, too! 2013's theme was "recovery", and though I didn't do much with it in the journal or consciously, the truth is I have actually got a lot better and am working on improving further. So that's a good thing. I'm hoping to consolidate on this year's successes with 2014's theme, which is going to be "resilience". At some point before the new year I'm going to sit down and write a post about my aims for the year and the tools I'm going to use to help and support me along the way. (2015's theme is, provisionally, "escape".)

*

I have a daily theme post to write today, and lots more 31 days to catch up on, too. I'll get there, though I suspect some of those topics will get pushed back to January!

I managed to get my US/rest of the world cards out in a timely-ish manner, but I think my Europe and UK cards will have to be posted on the 27th. Oh well. Belated Christmas joy!

Also in Christmsa fun - there are challenges happening! Make the Yuletide Gay stories are live, and my story is incredible!. It has lovely JuNi, and it's set in the AvengersVerse and it has PLOT! and AWESOME DIALOGUE! and SNARKY LANCE!

I am yet to read much else but am excited to go through the list. One advantage of a small fandom is at least "read all the stories" is manageable even with limited spoons?

Yuletide isn't live until tomorrow, but my story is DONE and POSTED and I'm excited for the stories to go live at some point tomorrow!

If you can guess either my MtYG or Yuletide story, I'll happily write you something! I'll leave comments screened, in case people want to guess.

In the meantime, Happy Christmas, and happy holidays to those of you who don't celebrate (and/or celebrate something else).
randomling: Lance Bass of *nsync, wearing shades and grinning, looks up and to the right. (lance shades)
I now have both my assignments! Quite excited to write both of my fics, at least right now. Must do a little brainstorming and figure out the shape of my fics.

Any interest in a supersecret writing filter? I might need a little support here...
randomling: Joey Fatone of *nsync looks up and to the left, laughing. The word "ahaha!" appears. (ahaha)
So apart from Harry Potter and the Methods of Anti-Gravity, I haven't posted any fic at all in almost three years. And I have written very little of anything in that time, either. I keep starting things and then abandoning them.

And yet I'm tempted to do two different Christmas exchange challenges this year. TWO.

One is Make the Yuletide Gay. I did it for the first three years, but have skipped it for the last two. It's in my old main fandom, popslash, and it must be admitted that I miss popslash dreadfully.

The other one is the famous Yuletide. This is much more work, because I have to figure out what fandoms to request and offer.

I think, however, that writing two 1000 word stories in 3 months is not impossible.

Friends, tell me if I am reckless and insane?

I finished my employability course. Now for some job-hunting.

Sign-ups for MtYG opened today and I am all signed up! Need to write a Dear Santa letter at some point. But beyond that, it's just sitting around waiting for my assignment to show up. (If you are, were or have considered being a popslasher at any point, you should totally consider signing up. Just saying!)

Haven't caught up with this week's SPN yet.

I am definitely Getting Better. Social life, daily showering, attending an employability course, improving the situation in my room. It's all good stuff! And I start therapy tomorrow, which should be interesting at the very least. More social life and more connection in general would be awesome, though. Working on that part.

Made bread yesterday. It was pretty tasty, but the texture was a bit dense. According to my book, that means it needs more kneading. So we'll see about trying again next week.

Also missed my nap yesterday which meant I was extraordinarily cranky all evening and had a very early night. Note to self: naps are good.

Oh, and absolutely everything has changed on World of Warcraft. Quite stressful - I have to learn to play Warrior all over again! (And all my other toons, but I'm definitely not thinking about that yet. New Warrior is enough of a learning curve all by itself, thanks.) Looks like the new expansion's going to be quite fun, though.

I'm still obsessed with Hit Record and its shiny awesomeness, but I'm also completely stuck on what to do over there. (I haven't even got my head around the UI yet!) But I did record my voice for a collaboration encouraging people to vote in the US mid-term elections. I approve of efforts to get people out to the polling booth, even in countries where I don't live!

I think that's all the updates for today! I think I'm going to try to make a conscious effort to show up more here. Hello!

If you can guess which story I wrote for Make The Yuletide Gay, I will offer you a ficlet of your choice.

Obviously, if you already know which story is mine, you are disqualified! Comments screened in order to preserve the integrity of your guesses... at least for now.

First, a meme:

If you could force me to write anything, what would it be?

Second, some stuff:

-I managed to get my SeSa written and posted by the deadline. Whoo! It's not my best story ever, which I suppose is what comes of writing the story in the last two days before the deadline, but I am rather proud of the title.

-This means that I'm now free to start working on something of my very own. It might be finishing off The Plan or one of the other big Priority 1 stories on my bunny list. Decisions, decisions.

-I have otherwise been rather fannishly lax recently, to my shame. Too much going on in real life. OMG, how is it Christmas so soon?

-That said, my friends, and particularly my fannish friends of all stripes, are pure awesome.

-That's all for now.
randomling: A very young Justin Timberlake with an expression of great distress. (oh noes)
Granted, I already have over a thousand words of SeSa.

But, I am sort of stuck. After a pretty good first scene, I'm not sure where to go next, or if I have the time (or the skill!) to write the story I want. Man, I feel so made of fail right now.

First drafts for [livejournal.com profile] bittybang are due on Friday. Which is awesome; I've had my draft for a couple of weeks now, but still don't have a summary, and it's hard to invent one. At some point in the next couple of days I shall have to!

I've been busy with life-stuff, so writing on The Plan has been stalled for a while. Would like to get at least a few more words on it before I have to edit [livejournal.com profile] bittybang and start on SeSa.

I'm also obsessing about Supernatural a lot. I'm up to 3x14 and really enjoying the show so far. I have a little bunch to watch before I'm done! [livejournal.com profile] etsu_88 kindly uploaded up to 4x06 for me, so I shall soon be completely up to date.

I haven't done any fic-reading for the longest time - like, months - mostly because my illness has been making it hard to concentrate. And now I'm starting to feel better and I'm dying to have something good to get my teeth into. I'm not really very well-read in popslash, and would love to have something cool and new-to-me to read. Would love something long, like, 10k+ long. Anyone have anything specific to recommend?

(I am not choosy on pairings, kinks or plotlines, particularly - but I AM choosy about quality. Which is silly in fanfic, I know, but there you have it.)

And finally. Because tomorrow's the final day for sign-ups, I'll provide another pimp. If you haven't signed up for MtYG yet, WHY NOT?!

This concludes my Stuff for today.
randomling: A wombat. (mtyg)
There are two more days to sign up for Make the Yuletide Gay this year.

We have 39 santas this year. The more the merrier, as always, so if you haven't done already - sign up and make it a merry Christmas for yourself and your recipient! It's such a fabulous challenge. I can't even tell you what a difference it made to my Christmas to be part of it and last year, as a brand new popslasher, really made me feel like I was part of the fandom.

So! It's time to sign up! If you haven't already, and you've been thinking about it, considering it, putting it off, or wavering, it's time to bite the bullet and join! Come on, people, you know you want to... yes, really you do! It will be awesome!

Pimping hat ON.
randomling: A wombat. (Default)

I'm trying not to pimp Make the Yuletide Gay every day until sign-ups close, because you guys will get very annoyed with me (particularly those of you who are already signed up, I"m sure!) but I think today is a good day to ramble on about why I think you should sign up.

It's my second year taking part in MtYG. Last year, I was so brand-shiny-new in the fandom that I couldn't imagine being able to write a decent story as a gift for someone. I'd literally got into popslash only weeks before.

I live with the truly awesome [livejournal.com profile] ephemera who encouraged me hugely to take part. She was also the person who got me into popslash and introduced me to my first raft of popslashy friends. I was very glad she did, because the process of writing my story was such fun that it got me writing again as a serious hobby after a break from both writing and slash of many years. I've now written over 50 popslash stories (many of them short ficlets, but still).

It was a fantastic experience. My mentor, [livejournal.com profile] pensnest, could not have been more helpful, and gave me a fantastic beta. I also had people who American-checked it for me and read it to make sure it didn't suck and to help me with giving the story a title. It was the challenge that - after suspecting it for a long time - that popslash fandom was awesome.

The resulting story was Six Steps To Being A Better Stand-Up, which I am still pretty damn proud of.

All this is pretty much to say: if you haven't signed up, DO IT! If you're brand new in popslash or haven't written in it for a while, if you're wavering, whatever the reason you haven't done it yet, DO IT! It made my Christmas last year, and I'm so excited for this year, it's not even true.

Come on! Sign up! You know you want to!

What else should I write? )
randomling: A very young Justin Timberlake with an expression of great distress. (oh noes)
  • I'm so impatient for SeSa sign-ups. I'm taking part in a test for it this weekend (about which I'm very excited!), and just the thought of it is getting me all geared-up for the real thing. Roll on Christmas!

  • I'm doing some serious thinking about my writing process and what works and doesn't work for me. So far I have discovered that the half-hour goals are fabulous for producing words, but not so much for producing words I like. (Whether that's an indication that I need to do more pre-planning, write slower, or be prepared to do more editing work, I'm not entirely sure.) I know that an exhaustive scene-by-scene plan doesn't work for me, as it tends to kill my desire to write the story, which is a fragile and precious thing. More thoughts on this as I continue.

  • I feel a bit like something is missing from my [livejournal.com profile] bittybang story, but I've resolved not to look at it again - beyond writing the required summary for the challenge - until the start of November. It's cool to have the time and leisure both to edit it, and to give myself some space and perspective on it before I start the editing process. (Weird, though - this'll be the first story I've ever tried that with. I hope I don't kill it like that.) Not sure if this is the right thing, but all the writing advice I've ever read says it's easier to edit something it if you put it away for a while. Time to find out if that's true for me.

  • I need to start thinking about when and how to run my Badfic Challenge next year. The only challenge I've ever done was the June Bug (which was pretty easy and I still sucked at it!) so I'm not sure how to go about it, really. Any tips, seasoned fans?

  • I'm worried about how the hell I'm going to finish "The Plan". What I've written so far is really different from what I wanted to write and while I've never written something this long, I discovered that getting down words-any-words isn't all that hard. I've never edited something this long, either, though, and the sheer size of the job ahead of me is really intimidating. Plus, I've only written half of the story, so I need to put the editing part of it out of my mind for now.

  • I think that's all for now!
